Our Dream Neighborhood
Nothing makes me happier than a good ol' cross-curricular project! The first graders learned all about neighborhoods in Social Studies, so the first grade teachers and I teamed up to create a special project called "Our Dream Neighborhood". The students were challenged to dream up, design, and create their perfect neighborhood. Students discussed what types of homes, stores, and services their neighborhood would offer, and then they got to work building and assembling all of the parts. I loved listening in on the design discussions about which places would be most important, and I couldn't help but laugh when I heard one student say, "We most definitely need an Urgent Care...and an Outback Steakhouse". Priorities! Haha! The final neighborhood was a healthy balance of everything, which showed us that the students understood the value of all of the different types of places. We were so proud of their hard work!
